"Strategies for Engaging & Moving White People into Racial Justice Action"

Millions of people of all backgrounds, with leadership coming from the Black community, are taking to the streets under the banner and vision of #BlackLivesMatter. With racism in the national headlines, the Black liberation movement on the move, and lots of white people questioning racism in the U.S., this is a powerful and important time to engage and move more white people into racial justice action. The purpose of the presentation is to support all who tend to feel more confident doing anti-racist work in white communities and to leave with ideas and tools for doing it more effectively.

About Chris Crass:
Chris Crass is a longtime organizer, educator, and writer working to build powerful working class-based, feminist, multiracial movements for collective liberation. In 1999, he helped launch the Catalyst Project, a project that combines political education and organizing to develop and support anti-racist politics, leadership, and organizing in white communities and builds dynamic multiracial alliances locally and nationally. He is part of the founding of the national white anti-racist network, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) and served on the leadership team in 2011.  Copies of his books (Towards Collective Liberation: Anti-Racist Organizing, Feminist Praxis, and Movement Building Strategy and Towards the "Other America": Anti-Racist Resources for White People Taking Action for Black Lives Matter) can be purchased and signed after his talk.

Art Force 5 Coming to Purchase on Monday, March 6

The Multicultural Center is bringing the Art Force 5 program to SUNY Purchase on Monday, March 6.

Established in 2006, the Art Force 5 program combines social justice with an art therapy approach. In addition to providing workshops to over one hundred audiences, they specialize in creating community-built art.

The campus will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on collaborative art project which will be worked on at each participating SUNY campus before a complete project is displayed in NYC on the one hundredth anniversary of a critical civil rights event.  The community-built art will commemorate the one hundred year anniversary of The Silent Parade organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and led by youth in East St. Louis, Illinois on July 28, 1917.

Homework Assignment from Claudia Rankine

On February 2, Claudia Rankine invited the campus to submit Pecha Kucha presentations.  A broadcast email was sent out on February 10th, below are details from the email:

Durst Distinguished Lecturer Claudia Rankine & Purchase College Present:
A Racial Imaginary Institute “Pop Up” @ Purchase College
Thursday, March 2, 4:30-6pm, Humanities Theater
“If we are not conscious about how we construct societies around race, then we will construct what was unconsciously constructed.”   – Claudia Rankine
What does it mean to investigate the construction of race in our everyday lives?
In what ways are these constructions practiced, maintained, and enforced?
We invite faculty, staff and students across campus to contribute to a special Durst Lecture Series event with Claudia Rankine.  Join us in creating imaginative and challenging investigations of the role of whiteness in our everyday spaces.  How is white dominance visible or invisible in the terrain familiar to you?  How could you use images to provoke a thoughtful interrogation of white supremacy in your area of study or work?
We seek broad community engagement and hope a multi-disciplinary approach will expand and deepen our understandings of white dominance and help us think through our roles in the fight toward equality.
The event will take place Thursday, March 2, from 4:30-6 p.m., in the Humanities Theater.
Prospective participants should compile a Pecha Kucha "20x20" presentation.  Pecha Kuchas consist of 20 slides that self-advance after 20 seconds, giving the presenter 20 seconds to talk about each slide, for a total presentation time of exactly 6 minutes, 40 seconds.  We expect to present 8-10 Pecha Kuchas, followed by Q&A with participants and Claudia Rankine.
Please consider submitting!  The submission deadline is Thu., Feb. 23.
Submission instructions
·      All submissions must be in PowerPoint.
·      All submissions must contain 21 slides: the first slide should give your name; the remaining 20 are the images you will talk about.
·      Include brief talking points in the "notes" field for each image to help us imagine your presentation.
·      The submission deadline is Thu., Feb. 23, 2017.  Early submissions are welcome.
·      Email your PowerPoint to Purchase.Pecha.Kucha@gmail.com.
Submissions workshop
The Multicultural Center is planning a workshop to answer questions and brainstorm with those who are intrigued but unsure.  Stay tuned for details, or contact Daisy Torres, ceg.multicultural.center@purchase.edu.

Mission:Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) believes in collective liberation -- and that none of us can be free until we end white supremacy.

SURJ's role as part of a multi-racial movement is to undermine white support for white supremacy and to help build a racially just society. That work cannot be done in isolation from or disconnected form the powerful leadership of communities of color. It is one part of a multi-racial, cross-class movement centering people of color leadership.

If there’s no documentation of our lives here now, then where’s the proof of us in the future? Join us for a week-long program the celebrates and explores different narratives for black futures. Reflecting on the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the new ascendance of white nationalism, we interrogate whether representation will equal empathy for black lives in the ensuing years.

“Keep America American”
Wednesday, February 22 in the Humanities Building Room 1040 from 11am-12:15pm
This teach-in will look at how and why the US shut its doors to immigration in 1924 and why it matters. We will look at the language and history of immigration restriction and how it has been resisted with an eye to the present and the future.

Punching Up: Opening Reception Wednesday, February 22 in the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery, Visual Arts Building from 6-7:30pm
Punching Up, curated by Jon Lutz and Janine Polak, brings together visual artists working within various permutations of humor (irony, puns, deadpan, satire, etc.) in the service of critiquing those in power. Referring to a comedy-world golden rule of taking cultural hierarchies to task, the artists in Punching Up point out, examine, and combat issues of power. When done with intelligence and humanity, humor has a unique ability to dismantle the status quo, be subversive, raise consciousness, and address current issues. Racism, classism, gentrification, capitalism, elitism, and the art world itself are all subjects to be exposed and examined. Artists featured in the show work in a variety of mediums including printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, video, and performance.

Artists included in the exhibition:
Caroline Chandler, Desiree Des, Ryan Falkowitz, Rob Hult, Cary Leibowitz, Brendan Loper, Divya Mehra, Jayson Musson, Pope.L, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Alan Resnick, Buzz Slutzky, Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung, Katie Vida.

Lift Every Voice
Wednesday, February 22 in Music Building, Recital Hall from 7-8:15pm
An interdisciplinary event, "Lift Every Voice" is the ninth annual concert in celebration of Black History Month here at Purchase. Featured will be the Purchase Soul Voices, directed by their founder, Prof. Pete Malinverni. The Soul Voices are 60-student choir from all backgrounds and majors united by a shared mission: to explore and celebrate the music of the African-American experience.
With the guidance of Prof. Pamela Prather, actors from the BFA Junior Company will share spoken word highlighting Black American stories of triumph and success. The evening promises to be uplifting and inspiring.
